N.I.E Numbers for British residents

Anyone intending to buy a property in Spain will need a NIE number, this is Spanish law and used for tax purposes. This is simply an identity number given to foreign nationals by the Spanish authorities. It is required by those wishing to carry out financial transactions in Spain, either for the purchase of a new home or to arrange a mortgage.

You mayy apply for your N.I.E number in the UK or in Spain. Applying at your nearest consulate is more expensive than getting a NIE in Spain but it may be easier and quicker to process in this country.

To apply in the UK, you need to take all necessary documents to the consulate where you will be asked to sign the NIE application form in front of a consulate employee. Your signature will be witnessed and validated with an official stamp.

You will need the following documents:

  • A stamped photocopy of your passport (this will be stamped at the consulate)
  • 2 recent passport size photos.
  • An original copy + photocopy of a document which explains why you need your NIE. This may be the private sales contract you have signed with the estate agent, promotor or private vendor, if you are going to work in Spain, the job offer... We suggest ringing the consulate beforehand to find out what to take depending on your personal circumstances
  • A self-addressed envelope
  • An envelope big enough to contain your NIE form and documents, this should be addressed to: Comisaría General de Extranjería y Documentación, Dirección General de Policia, C/ General Pardiñas, 90, 28006 Madrid, Spain:

All of the above will be posted by the consulate to Madrid, in the envelope you provided.
